Lymph node and lymph duct scintigraphy

Indications

  • Looking for the sentinel lymph node
  • lymphoedema test

Assessment of lymph flow

  • 1 and 2 hours after administration of the pharmacon whole body scan

During the examination we inject a small amount of radioactive substance into the skin at the site of the tumor.

Sentinel lymph node scintigraphy

During the examination the first lymph node appears, which is involved in lymph diversion of the tumorous area and this is called a sentinel lymph node. If the tumor spreads through the lymphatic system, first it gets into this special lymph node.
During the examination we inject a small amount of radioactive substance under the skin at the site of the tumor. This substance gets into the sentinel lymph node through the lymphatic vessels. We identify the exact place of the sentinel lymph node with a manual gamma probe and sign it on the skin. (But in advance we do not know whether there are any tumorous cells in that lymph node.) After this the surgeon will know where the affected lymph node is, which is then removed and sent to histopathological examination.

There is no need for special preparations.
